If you are saying that the growth that is already present is from 1-5 feet tall then they are gonna take lots of water and you can count on a lot of dieback What variety or species are we talking about? Are you getting dirt with rhizomes or just digging rhizomes. Also were they in full sun or part sun/shade If they were in shade and you put them in full sun this will again need lots of extra water and possibly some temporary shade. But I honestly would say cut part of the oldest canes back to ground level and let new growth start in zone 9 the regrowth should be rapid. keep moist give a light dose of fertilizer but the most important thing is water.
