Eek -- unexpected ginger!

Help help, all you wise people. ;-)

A very kind trader snuck a ginger -- Hedychium x 'Luna Moth' -- into a trade box she sent me. I'm very happy to have it -- I'm a sucker for anything fragrant -- but I'm also pretty clueless when it comes to gingers.

From what I've read so far, this ginger wants good moisture and part shade. But:

1. will it insist on really good drainage, or will it stand for less?
2. just how hardy or tender is it? Would I have a chance of getting it through the winter outside?

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Hi-
It has a lovely fragrance- you will like it a lot.
But.... I don't think it will be hardy outside in your zone. Of course- it is prolific- so plant it outsdie- in the fall- dig a little bit of rhizome up and bring indoors to over-winter. Or just plant it all in a big pot and bring the pot indoors in the Winter.
It will survive in just about anything- clay, sand, bogs. But it thrives in a nice soil with good drainage.
-Enjoy- gwenn

Thanks Gwenn! That's exactly what I wanted to hear. I've got it in a pot for now. If it outgrows the pot I'll put part in the ground to experiment with, and take the rest in for the winter. Thanks again!
