Question about Alpinia Pumila

Posted by stacyrp 10a (My Page) on

I have had an Alpinia Pumila for a few months now. The place I got it from said to plant in full sun but then I read on a website that it likes full shade. I removed it from the full sun because the leaves were scorched and no new growth was occurring. I removed all the leaves (there were only 4) because of their condition. I have it now in a container where it gets about 3 hours of afternoon sun. I still do not see any new growth. I think I am doing/have done something wrong and would like to know if anyone has suggestions that may be able to help revive this plant. Also, are they slow growers? Thanks so much!

RE: Question about Alpinia Pumila

Alpinia pumila is one I find to be a slow grower. Well I would actually call it a slow spreader. I have grown it for about 3 years now in my yard, the most successful spots have been in filtered light under the canopy of another plant, or in shade. In direct sun the silver coloration will not be nearly as prominent. It has slowly spread from the original plants, but by no means fast. Give it some time, it should resprout. I have some divisions in pots that were very slow to get going at first, but eventually they sprouted.

Sincerely,
Scott Durand
