Black Knight

I have a ginger that is unlabeled but the nursery lady told me that it was a Black Knight or Black Night. The foliage appears to be similar to the pinecone gingers except that it is a dark brown and the pinecomes are only about 12" high and are a soft yellow color. It's very unusual, to me, and very pretty.
Can you experts tell me what I have?

| I'd imagine they just mislabeled Zingiber malaysiana 'Midnight' as 'Black Night.' Trade names tend to get mixed up easily, and that is the only Zingiber in the trade like that. It is normally just labeled as Zingiber sp. 'Midnight' It was described as a new species not too long ago. There is a Kaempferia sp. called 'White Knight' and its red striped version called 'Red Knight' though those aren't commercially available yet. The 'White Knight' probably won't ever be in the trade, but the 'Red Knight' is pretty impressive and totally different as far as the Peacock gingers go. Tim Chapman |
