Hi, have a friend that has a huge clump of this in his yard. he dug me up a bunch, but has no idea what it is. The foliage is very spicy smelling also. Anyone have any idea?

Looks like Alpinia galanga. The common name is Galangal and it is used commonly in Indian cooking (in addition to other asian cusines). You should be able to find lots of information on the internet about this species.
