how long can rhizomes be stored?

| can rhizomes (and I'm specifically interested in knowing about that of the white butterfly ginger/ hedychium coronarium) be dormant and stored for up to a couple years? |

| They sell them in plastic packages in Hawaii so I would guess they have a shelf life |
