Ok ya'll , need some help. My husband brought me home a plant and the only info on the tag is a name that is somewhat faded. The best I can figure is that it says "kaempferia dol chain". There is nothing else on the tag and I don't know how to care properly for this plant. The lady at the nursery told him it was a type of ginger. Please help me out!!!!

Could it be Kaempferia pulchra? Can't think of a name like "dol chain". No matter, most Kaempferias have similar culture. They like shade (should do reasonably well indoors), and even moisture during their growing season. They go dormant in the winter-- all the foliage will die back, but it will be back again in the spring.

Maybe it is pulchra - hard to tell. Thanks for the info., glad I know now before winter came and I would have thought I killed the poor thing.

This will grow in Z9 Tx as a garden plant no problem. The Kaempferias are very much like, and are a southern sub for, hosta. These are commonly called peacock gingers. They come in a wide variety of leaf shapes and that is mainly what they are grown for ... the leaves. As Lisa pointed out ... and remember think hosta ... it perfers shade and a low growing plant. Some have pretty flowers too. I have mine as bedding plants near the front of the beds. They die back in the winter but the tubers resprout in spring.
If you post a pic of a leaf you should be able to get an ID on it.
