Curcuma ID?

The local Home Depot has 3 different looking Curcumas all labeled "Alismatifolia" in 1 gallon pots. LOL I'm looking for "Petiolata" but I'm confused regarding the differences of Curcumas. And these are small plants. Does anyone know what in FACT (plant features) I should be looking to find Petiolata? I didn't have my camera with to snap pics but here's a brief description of each.

1. Long flower stem, cone shaped purple flower, medium width leaves, very faint (if at all) red lines down the center of the leaves, red lower leaf stalk.
2. Medium flower stem, purple flower kind of ball shaped, very faint (if at all) red lines down the center of the leaves, red lower leaf stalk. *This one looks like "Australasica".
3. Short flower stem, cone shaped deep dark purple flower, very thin leaves, with red lines down the center of the leaves, mostly green leaf stalk. *This one reminds me of "Aeruginosa".

I read Alismatifolia requires consistent moist soil. I like Petiolata for it's wide leaves, growth rate, large size, lower water needs, and hardiness. I had a piece of stem but it rotted over the winter in a wet area and I want to replace it. A friend of mine has it and it comes back huge and strong every year.

Or to save me time, anyone in the Jacksonville are know where I can find Hidden Ginger Petiolata Curcuma? Thanks.

RE: Curcuma ID?

Curcuma alismatifolia is a different species than petiolata. Its a 'tulip' curcuma grown mainly for the flower and it blooms a lot sooner than petiolata with vastly different looking flowers.

I have petiolata, also known as 'petiolata variegata Emperor'. I have lots and lots of it, LOL you are right hte size of the stand does increase yearly.

I would be happy to trade you some as we are both in FLorida, if you have anything of interest. I grow lots and lots of tropical plants and my interests are very wide.

Please email me privately if you are interested in a trade
