getting gingers to bloom

How does one encourage gingers to bloom? I have mine in a raised bed with a good bit of shade. I think that all of them are hedychium(sp). They include Ayo, butterfly, and a couple of others that were given to me and I've forgotten their names.

Do they need more sun? More fertilizer? I'm hesitant to do much of anything because I don't want to do the wrong thing.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Most of my curcumas and hedychiums are planted in full sun and like the ones planted in partial shade, they bloom in August.
I do apply fertilizer made just for ginger. I think it depends on how early your warm climate starts, being they are tropicals. The only thing I don't do to the gingers is apply insecticide....somehow only butterflies flock to the blooms. Hope this helps.

Thanks so much for your advice. I'm in NW Florida so warm comes early here. Especially this year. I'll have to find some ginger-special fertilizer.

Thanks again,
Sara

Some of my gingers are in direct sun and some are in partial shade, they do get plenty water and bloom regularly. I've not used any type of fertilizer, only kept them in good soil. I see you live next door. Let me know if you would like to trade some gingers or other plants.
