New to ginger growing

| Hello :) I have a white ginger plant that is about a year old, grown from a piece of root from one of those packages you buy in Hawaii. I started it in the same pot it is in now. It seems to be growing up and up but not out :) Is this normal?
I water it so the soil is usually moist, it is in the bathroom for some humidity and started fertilizing it once a month. Anything else I should be doing? Will it ever get bushy? How big does it get? Repot when? Should I mist the leaves? Any advice for a newbie ginger grower would be great.
Thanks!

It needs a bigger pot. But I sugguest you plant it in the ground for summer and dig it up before the first freeze. It will multiply much faster in the ground. Put it in a 3-5 gallon pot when you dig it up. Unless you keep it very warm and give it lots of light it will go dormant. If it does do not water unless it's very dry and then only sparingly. Gingers do not get bushy. They always form a single stalk. It will spread side ways but one stalk at a time. Yours looks good for a years growth in that small pot. |

| OMG! That is a small pot?? Whew, this plant is already bigger than I anticipated but pretty. I will find a spot to let it live outside for a bit and dig it up as suggested. Thanks for the tip :) |

| Hey!! The thing is sprouting another cane at the bottom!! Whoo Hooo!! Cactus freak, maybe I shouldn't transplant it after all. I am afraid the rabbits will eat it outside :( I think I will wander off to HD and get a 5 gal pot. I guess that ginger likes my bathroom :) I am thinking about getting a grow light and putting it in one of my recessed light cans in there. Maybe the extra oomph will make it flower someday... |

| I am new to ginger as well. When do you know to split the root...my plant has gotten very big. Do you cut it back for the winter? |

| I am also new to growing ginger. I also bought mine in Hawaii at one of those ABC stores. I had purchased two, one for me and one for my dad, mine died and dads grew famously. I have overwintered his in my window, its in a large pot and has about 10 stalks. I would like to split it up before returning it to him, lol. I was curious as to when or if it will ever bloom. I do mist the leaves, it seems to help keep the leaf ends from turning brown. |
