Pinecones flowering

I've got Z. zerumbet growing in two different beds. One gets sun from early morning through about 3pm and the other gets sun from about 10am til 2pm. The ones with more sun are about 4' versus 2' - 3' for the ones with less.

I was surprised yesterday to see inflos coming up on the more shaded bed; there're none in the sunnier bed. I was guessing the larger/leafier plants would send pinecones up first.

So, my question is -- do pinecones need some shade to flower?

Thanks,
Dave

Thanks for the feedback. Not sure what I'm doing to get the flowering now. A friend in New Orleans (one zone further south) has had pinecones inflos for a month now!

In Costa Rica they are grown mainly in the shade.

HA!!! Dave you are just braggin' that you finally got them pinecones to bloom. HA!!!!
I counted the 'cones this morning and I see 12 of 'em. All are still green and continue to put out flowers. I like'em best when they start to change over to the red color. Then they really start jumpin'!!!

Okay, I am really perplexed. The cones on my ginger have yet to lift a pointy head. I was only jealous in July. Now, I'm worried. One clump is in partly shady...the others in mostly sunny. I know you will say the problem is "too much green." I have so many leaves...but I don't fertilize. Are the cones just afraid to come up?
