Shell Ginger question

| Hi all,
I have always wanted to get a ginger plant and happen to find one this weekend. One of the local plant stores here (atlanta) had these huge shell gingers in five gallon pots for $15 bucks. I know I will be lucky if it surives the winter here but going to stick in the ground and try.
Since this thing is as wide as a small table and very root bound, I wanted to divide it up into at least 2 sections.
Any danger in just kinda choping it in half? Anyone ever divided one?
Thanks!

| you could take a chainsaw to a large clump like that and still have lots of survivors. You can just cut thru it in half, or knock off most of the soil and divide it into several pieces. If you are trying to test it for hardiness, i'd just go with two clumps. If it survives, you can 'go to town' with dividing your clumps even more. Its not a wimpy plant, and takes a good bit of abuse. Tim Chapman |
