Purpurata does not like my 10a climate. You are right, if it disappears, it is not coming back. I still grow it, since it is such a nice plant, but I think a colder than normal winter will put it all at risk. The variety "Kimi" is performing better than the others for me right now, but that is against the popular idea that it is more cold sensitive than most. Mine is blooming nicely right now.

Do you have any pictures? How fast does it grow and how tall does it get? I bought a couple of "touristy" bags of little rootlets and they are all growing and doing well. I was wondering what they would look like fully mature so I can figure out some place to put them.

I live in San Antonio, Texas. I'm getting ready to plant a couple of Red ginger and could use any advice you can give. I plan on planting them in a flower garden among oak trees that get morning sun/afternoon shade....filtered sun. How big will they get.....do they multiply....and when can I expect their first blooms?

Since I live in zone 10 (probably 10b), and am nursing some alpinia purpurta babies along...can anyone provide more feed back on these? Please!
