Heliconia Andromeda HELP

Posted by tropicaltide FL (My Page) on

I have a heliconia andromeda and it came with no care instructions. Where do you trim the blooms at? There are seven stalks open right now and most of the "fingers" have fallen off or wilted. How do I cut the stalks to have new sprouts arise??? Cut at the base of the bloom? Cut at the base of the stalk nearest the closest leaf? Any help is appreciated! Thanks.

(Plant is about 4ft tall and potted outside. I live in South Florida so the temperature has been between 75-90 degrees.)

Once a stalk has flowered, it terminates. After the bloom begins to look ragged, cut it down right above the soil level. New shoots grow from the underground rhizome and produce new blooming stalks.
