nurturing seedlings

Some of my gingers (ordinary reds) have a crop of seedlings growing from the flower. I tried cutting the flower off and throwing the whole thing in the ground but it all just withered. Anyone know the best way to get them to take? Should I pull the little ones out of the flower and baby them individually?

| Laurie, they're not seedlings, but aerial plantlets. The best way is to let them mature as much as possible on the plant before you remove them. Try to let them get at least 6" long (or more, which will probably weigh the flower head down to the ground) and then put them into a pot with some potting soil. You can either leave the whole cluster together and get a quick clump, or separate the individual shoots to get more plants, which will then take longer to form a clump. Either way, the keikis should have started to form their own roots by then, so they will be a lot easier to start than if you cut the head off when they're tiny. |
