ginger blooming... but flopping

This is the first time I've ever had ginger. I have four different gingers growing in pots on my deck. The Giant Ginger is blooming but badly flopping over. The White Ginger is not blooming but it is also flopping. I was gone quite a bit lately so I don't think the plants got as much water as they would have if I had been here but they don't look like they are flopping because of this. There is some tip burn but, for the most part, they just look like they grew well and got too tall to hold themselves up.

Is this to be expected? Do they normally require staking?

Not sure what plant you are referring to as "Giant Ginger", as I've never heard that name. Do you know the species, have a photo, or at least a description?

Some gingers have an arching habit, while others are more upright. Sometimes the weight of an old inflorescence or aerial offsets can pull the stem down, but drying out or being underpotted can make them floppy too.

Are they in deep shade? In most cases, the stems will be thinner and weaker in a shady area, and that can also make them more prone to flopping.

A picture is worth a thousand words. Post one, and we'll be able to give much better answers.

Thanks... but I don't have any pics or a way to take them and post them quickly. The tag on this plant, when it was given to me by a friend at San Antonio Botanical Garden, says "Giant Ginger." I don't have any way to key it out (no source for doing so) or I would have myself. However, I suspected the shade problem but don't have any other place to put them w/o deer devouring them. I wasn't sure about the "underpotted" but I'm sure that's a possibility, too.

Thanks for your feedback!

I have Mr. Moy's (plant geneticist for SA Botanical Garden) gigante ginger and I have always had to stake it because it is very tall and grows upright. It should be grown in morning sun or bright shade and watered lavishly. It is a hedychium with very large golden yellow blooms. Smells heavenly too.

Thanks, Sowandsew! My friend did tell me that the ones I got from him were Mr. Moy's selections so I'm sure you nailed it as to which one it is. Yes, it does have golden yellow blooms and is very fragrant.

Thanks again!

Brad
