Help with identification and habit, please.

I received this plant about 3 years ago, and it grew and grew, but did not flower. The leaves never unfurled until this year, when, just as I was ready to dig it up and toss it, it bloomed for the first time. I do not know what this ginger is, as this is the first I've had it. It is about 3 feet high and has taken over this spot in my very small garden. I'd like to move it, but I'm afraid I'll have to wait another 3 years for a bloom. I'd love to have someone's expertise as to what type it is and how I should treat it. What is the best way to keep it in check?
Thanks

Hedychium coronarium, variously known as White Butterfly Ginger, or where I live just White Ginger.

Unfortunately, I don't think you'll have much luck keeping it in check AND getting it to bloom. You can do one or the other, but it blooms a lot better with a fair sized root mass. You could try confining it to a big pot, but it'll bloom better in the ground.

Thanks Lisa. Guess I'll just have to live with it where it is. As I mentioned, my yard is postage stamp size, and I'm afraid it will overtake the house, if I'm not careful. Wonder if I can just hack off some of the shoots from the original mass as it gets bigger. Sure to love the smell.
