babies (kikis?) on ginger flower

Posted by abendwolke 9 FL (My Page) on

my orange dancing girl ginger blooms nicely and today I noticed small plants growing out of the older flower spikes.
Can I pot those up and will they grow? If so, when should I do it, is there a certain size recommendation?

Thanks for any advise :-)

RE: babies (kikis?) on ginger flower

Are you referring to Globba schomburgkii 'Yellow Dancing Girl'? The babies are sprouting from little bulbous that didn't fall from the infloresecence and you cetainly may plant them. They will actually drop from the plant and sprout all over the place. Two different Globbas will do that. Costus will also sprout kikis from the inflorescence and one Hedychium also does this Hedychium 'greenii'.
Hope this has been of some help.

yes, thank you Liz :-)
The dancing girl is one of my favorites, it doesn't seem to grow taller than 1' and the flowerspikes are so beautiful. I plan on going to an upcoming plant swap in Oct. so if the kikis survive, I am sure they will find good homes.
