Your ginger is probably Curcuma Petiolata, a nice one that came into bloom for me a month ago. Most other curcumas should do well for you also. Hedychium gingers will grow in your zone although they probably should be grown in mostly shady conditions because of your heat. These gingers produce scented flowers and are commonly known as butterfly gingers. They come in all colors but the most scented and easiest to grow is Hedychium Coronarium, a large white flowered ginger that blooms terminally on the end of a 4 to 6 foot stalk. You could definitely also grow Alpinia Zerumbet, shell ginger, and it's cousin, the variegated version, but be careful with this one because if it likes where you plant it, you'll never get rid of it.
