Do you have a Mexican food market or Asian market near you? If you look for a real fresh root it will sprout for you. Even a Wal-Mart Super Center will have one in the vegetable bin.

This is just the regular ginger from the store. Publix rhizomes sprout easily.

In late spring, I got three pounds of ginger root from an Asian produce market (in Seattle's Chinatown). I think I paid $1.49 a pound.

I planted the rhizomes close to the surface (partially exposed) in a large terra cotta pot, in a warm sunny location. I put basil plants around them so the pot wouldn't look empty. Kept the soil pretty moist. The overplanting of basil also kept the tiny shoots from getting sunburned. The shoots are now about a foot high!

jeffseattle, I do wish I was near you, I went to Wallyworld and checked out the price on ginger root there, following the advice of cactusfreak and a small roots that weights about 3 or 4 oz. costed almost 4 bucks, Thanks tho cactus freak, I will check out other veggie markets in other grocery stores and see what they have. If I can find some at a good price I will try potting it up in the spring, Thanks Bihai for letting me know that Publix rhizomes sprout easily, I was wondering about that too, Jen
