How to plant a red ginger?

I received a red ginger bulb(?) as a gift from Hawaii that came in a little plastic bag with minimal instructions on how to plant it. It says to plant roots 2" deep into the soil, but being a newbie that I am, I have no clue what is what. It looks like a bulb with a thin pointy thing at one end. There were also some stringy things in the bag along with some moist saw dust looking stuff. If those stringy things are the roots, when I opened the bag, they were not attached to the bulb (if that is what it's called). So, I just got a small pot, some potting soil, and planted the bulb (?) about 2" deep with the pointy end sticking up out above the soil line. Then I proceeded to water it and have been keeping it moist for the past week or so. Did I plant this right? Was the pointy thing supposed to be planted underneath the soil? And where/what are the roots that the instructions said to plant 2" deep? Please Help! Thanks!

The 'bulb' is the root. It is not called a bulb. It is a rhizome
Lift it out of the pot and lay it sideways so that the pink tips are up if there are any. Barely cover with soil.
Also you need a least a gallon size pot. It will out grow that in 6-8 weeks and then transplant to a larger pot.
Was there a picture on the bag? It could be a hardy type ginger that you could plant directly in the ground. But without knowing the variety play it safe and keep it in a pot. Take it inside if your temps go below 45.
It needs a well draining soil so that you can water it often without it getting soggy. Also lots of fertilizer.

Thanks for the info., cactusfreak. It's much appreciated!

Btw, the picture on the bag looks pretty much exactly like the picture at the top right corner of this ginger forum. The bag says 'Hawaii's Red Ginger Plant'.

I don't recall seeing any pink tips before planting in that small pot. I just recall seeing something that looks like a bulb with a short stemmy looking tip. I will definitely go out and purchase at least a 1 gallon pot, lift it out of its current pot, and plant it correctly.

Thanks again!
