where should I plant it?

| I live in Austin, TX (where it's very very hot this time of year), and I just bought a beautiful large butterfly ginger from a local nursery that's already flowering. I can't decide exactly where to plant it (or when--should I wait until the fall when it's cooler? Will it be okay in a smallish black nursery pot until then?). I've got all sorts of options--a good amount of sun about half the day, mostly shade with some early morning sun, some shade and a lot of afternoon sun? I guess my basic question is this: If I have to go with a little less sun or a little more sun (b/c I know that too much sun, especially evil afternoon sun, will scorch this plant) which should I choose if I still want it to bloom every year?
Thanks,

More sun = quicker blooming. More sun = greater water need Although it may not be generally known, Hedychiums (butterfly gingers) can grow in bog to pond conditions. My tallest and largest hedychiums grow in the back downslope from my swimming pool in a 100% wetland setting in full sun. By wetland situation I mean that the water table is above the soil level, ie its a true bog with standing water. It wasn't always that way, it turned into a bog after Hurricanes Frances and Jeanne last September...the gingers predated the bog...but I left them and they only thrived and got bigger and better. I thought that they would rot in cold wet conditions in winter but they didn't. So basically, you can plant your gingers in any of your lighting situations, but the more sun they get, give them plenty of water to keep them happy. You don't need to wait til its cooler to plant them. Getting them in now as soon as possible will help them get big and strong before they freeze down in winter. I lived in Austin for 4 years, great city. Miss it. I'm a Gator now by default, still a Longhorn at heart. |

| well I can only share my experience, I recently planted 5 new gingers in my new bed...and they are getting pretty crispy in this heat, they get lots of sun. I am in Houston. I wish I had waited until it cooled down a bit before I put them in their homes, even if it meant they didn't get to grow as much...small is better than dead. I hope I can save them from death. :( So if you are going to put them in the ground I'd put them in shade and possibly move them later once they get used to the heat. Just my 2 cents. |
