How much water can they take?

| I have one Hedychium coccineum aurantiacum and one Hedychium Moy Giant that I got from Plant Delights several weeks ago. Planted both in part sun (mid-day). The former is in wet soil, has put up new growth, but some stalks are falling over. The other in a pretty well-drained spot, and seems ok so far. I gather that gingers in general like moisture, but how much water do they need; how much can they take? If stalks are falling over is that from too much water? |

not all gingers like to have their 'feet' wet, most actually prefer an evenly moist soil to dry. If your pseudostems are still green at ground level (where they are falling over) then they are not getting enough sun and the pseudostems are not strong enough to support themselves. Hedychiums tend to like morning sun and afternoon shade, here in Florida. In some other areas (depending on soil type, etc..) they will grow in full sun. Liz |

| Thanks Liz. The stalks are green on the one that's flopping so perhaps I should move it to a spot with better sun. Do you know if that would best be done during winter? |
