Your favorite group of gingers?

I admit it, I'm a hedychium snob. I have a couple of curcumas and I sent my alpinia packing for warmer climes as it won't bloom here. I have about 45 hedys and I love each and everyone of them. Several are in bloom now with new ones putting up inflos. What are y'alls preferences in the ginger kingdom?

Well, you certainly can't beat the Hedychiums for fragrance, and we have a few that I really like (especially 'Fukuju', blooming now), but in general I prefer something a little more unusual, or that flowers more often or has nicer foliage. I'm extremely fond of Etlingeras, they just have that tropical look, and there are some very interesting Zingibers, but right now I'm really into the Globbas. They do very well for us, are a lot more trouble-free than most of the Curcumas, bloom their little heads off the whole time they're above ground and make great 6" potted plants for our spring and summer sales. I've been playing around with hybridizing them and have a very cool new one that I hope to be releasing next year. As far as I know, no one else has really been working with them either, so that just adds to the appeal!

Really like Costus for the variety of forms within the family. There is a height, texture, color, growth habit for almost any situation. Having said that,Globbas are really cool too. lisaclv, don't be such a tease just telling us about your new hybrid, post a picture of that bad boy.

Awww... twist my arm. ;-)

Actually, I've been a little paranoid about posting a picture before I'm ready to release it, but since you asked, pbdollar, I'll give you a little sneak preview. Not available yet, though.

I like Costus a lot too, BTW. Technically they're in their own family, though. The range of flower and foliage forms, stem markings, leaf coloration and texture makes them a really interesting group of plants.

Here is a link that might be useful: Globba 'Blue Hawaii'

RE: Your favorite group of gingers?

So Lisa, you ARE going to ship these to the mainland and I get to be first on the list, right??????? lol

Favorite wise, if we include Costus, it gets my vote as well. If not, I'd probably say Etlingeras are a favorite.

Lisa, thank you for sharing the photo of "Blue Hawaii" with us,a stunning bloom to say the least. We'll look forward to next years release. I have a question about Globba but don't want to hijack this thread so I'll ask in a new post.

RE: Your favorite group of gingers?

So sorry, no shipping. :-(

You guys are just going to have to come here or wait until someone on the mainland gets it and puts it into production. You'd certainly be high on my list, Karen, along with Tim Chapman. Speaking of which, has anybody heard from him lately? I don't want to hijack the thread either but he seems to have dropped out of sight.

His sight is down too, don't know what's up. My favorite is Costus and my favorite ginger is Costus Barbatus, we have over 200 gingers in our collection and it's still my 'baby'.

RE: Your favorite group of gingers?

I agree, Liz. Costus barbatus is a great plant-- very adaptable to sun or shade, strong, attractive and a long-lasting cut flower too. I think everybody should be growing that one!

RE: Your favorite group of gingers?

Small plants, easy to grow and fantastic foliage patterns as well as great flowers What more could you ask for? Yes some are even fragrant. With over 50 species available a great opportunity to play God and make new hybrids.

I really love the big fat leaved Kampheria I have. It gives me new flowers every day. But I like how long Globba lasts..Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket

But I have to say Curcuma, Raspberry is dramatic:

RE: Your favorite group of gingers?

Hi Kabby, I agree with you a hundred percent. Since my first white butterfly ginger I have been in love. Quite frankly I didn't until a few years past know there were other hedychiums. then I came across H. coccineum by accident and refused to leave a distant cousins house until she promised I could dig up a clump, So I did. This year I went down to Tallahassee to see the gingersrus man and bought a really good start of a continuing collection. I do have a few curcumas and they are nice and of course those two common alpinias and another no name but nothing compares to the Hedychims for me Oh I do have some of the dancying lady's also.
