Hardiest Hedychium

Hello-
I see that many Hedychium varieties are rated to zone 7b--however, I live on the border of 6b/7a. Which varieties, in your opionions, are the hardiest? Also, do any survive winter dampness better than others? Thanks!

RE: Hardiest Hedychium

I think H. coronarium (white butterfly ginger) is probally the hardest since it is most common. It tolerates wet winters in my garden.
Also H. Elizabeth and Kahali are worth trying and just add a layer of mulch before the heavy rains come. This will keep them somewhat dry so they will not freeze and thaw too much.

i would say h. coccineum is one of the hardiest commonly found varieties from my experience. as mentioned above, mulch well in marginal climates. you might want to dig a rhizome for insurance.

The instructions on my white butterfly ginger rhizomes said "one of the hardiest gingers, to 0 degrees." I kept it in pots in a cold greenhouse over the winter, and the ginger never died back, even though outdoor temperatures got down into the teens.
