Two ginger ID's

Posted by night_breed Bali (My Page) on

Hello

I recently found two very interesting gingers in west Kalimantan. Finding an ID for either has proven very difficult so I thought I might give this forum a shot.

Can anyone ID either of these?

1. Possible Globba? That's my hand in the image to give it some scale.

2. I'm guessing a Hornstedia of some kind, it had stilted roots.

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers, Troy

Hi Troy,

Those are some interesting plants you found! The first one is definitely a Globba and is probably G. brachyanthera. If the flowers open for you please take another picture and post it and I can probably give you a definite ID. I've never seen such an intense red-orange like that in that species before (very, very few Globbas have that kind of coloration).

The other one is a Hornstedia. Don't know the species, but I bet it too is interesting given the way the bracts open up on top. I thought it was an Etlingera at first because of that.

Kyle, have you seen that Globba that Mike has at the Smithsonian (I think it came from Mark Collins) that has very wide flat sheaths and broad leaves, glaucus foliage? Any idea what it is? Has not flowered yet, but I can probably get a photo to you if you need it.
