New gingers planted this spring.

I ordered several Hedychium gingers this spring and planted them in April or May....Dr Moy and some Tai Princess. They are planted in the shade of some bananas and have only grown to about three feet tall and have not flowered. They have been fed along with my bananas (which are doing spectacularly). Should I expect them to not flower this first year for me or maybe move them next year to an area with more sunlight?

Melinda,
I would move them to an area with more sunlight. If they are only getting to 3 ft. tall, then they aren't getting enough sun. Most of the hedychiums will bloom the first year if conditions are right.

Thank you for your suggestion! This forum is not too busy this time of year, and I was hoping I would get help!

I think I will dig them up after they go dormant, and replant in the spring in a sunnier location.

Melinda,
I used to dig my hedychiums up and store them inside, but found that the ones that I left outside (heavily mulched) grew larger and bloomed earlier. I was so afraid that I'd lose them that I just tried leaving a few outside to see what would happen. Now, I leave them all in the ground.

I do dig up most of my curcumas, as the only ones that seem winter hardy here are the ones that I have planted in protected areas next to the house.

I do love my gingers!

Would you recommend moving them to a sunnier location now then... I don't know that they would have much time to adjust, OR would you recommend leaving them in the ground in their current place until the spring and then moving them to a sunnier spot??? I have greatly enjoyed their foliage so far and am looking forward to flowers next year.

Melinda,
I would wait and move them in the spring.

tnshadylady,
What low temps did you experience last winter with your hedychiums? I have three different varietys that bloomed for me this year and am aware of my borderline location for leaving them in the ground, but was planning to dig them up and put them in pots for the winter anyway, but I am tempted to leave them in the ground now since I have so many other plants that I will need to dig up.
