Cut back verigated ginger???

Posted by gardenlady76 TX coast/9 (My Page) on

First let me state I am not a ginger grower, but, I am now in possession of two rather large verigated ginger. That's all I know about them. They seem to be in poor shape, all of the leaves have brown tips or half of the leaf is brown and crispy, lack of water I would venture to say. My question is, can I cut the plants back to get new growth? My first instinct is just cut them back, but as I know nothing about ginger I thought I would ask the experts. They are in good sized pots (20 inches) and the soil, outside of being dry when I got them seems good. Also what fertilizer should I use? Any info will appreciated.

Any general balanced fertilizer would be fine, like an 8-8-8 or 20-20-20 etc. You can cut them back, but if there is still a good bit of undamaged leaves then I would leave them until new stems appear. It is a vigorous species and if taken care of it will sprout new shoots soon.

Thanks for the information. They really are beautiful plants, or will be. Thanks again.
