Cut back verigated ginger???

First let me state I am not a ginger grower, but, I am now in possession of two rather large verigated ginger. That's all I know about them. They seem to be in poor shape, all of the leaves have brown tips or half of the leaf is brown and crispy, lack of water I would venture to say. My question is, can I cut the plants back to get new growth? My first instinct is just cut them back, but as I know nothing about ginger I thought I would ask the experts. They are in good sized pots (20 inches) and the soil, outside of being dry when I got them seems good. Also what fertilizer should I use? Any info will appreciated.
