What is turmeric?

I bought some turmeric rhizomes at a local Indian market and I was wondering if someone could tell me the the species name and its hardiness. It has begun the sprout and I think I will keep it potted inside until next spring. Also, what do the flowers of Z. officionale look like? I planted some rhizomes from the supermarket this summer and now they are sending out flower spikes. Thanks.

Curcuma spp. is turmeric. Possibly hardy in your zone.

Curcuma domestica is the name for turmeric. Its often called Curcuma longa as well. Its a long story on which name is correct. For the most part they are the same plant except that now a few ornamental species have been called C. longa though I doubt that they really are even closely related. It is definitely hardy in USDA zone 8. You will probably have a hard time growing it out now and over winter. The natural cycle is for it to be going dormant now. The cooler temps and short days will not be too good for it. If it fails, don't be surprised, just buy a piece in spring to start one in the normal growing season. Its a very easy plant to grow.

The blooms on Z.officinale are a light cream color on a small green inflorescence. nothing impressive to look at... but some think its cute.
