ginger in slightly colder climes

Hello. I've looked through this forum and see that most of you live in zones 8 and above. I have recently purchased a couple of gingers - a peacock ginger and a costus - and am wondering how I should overwinter them here in zone 6b. I think I am understanding that it will be too cold to leave them in the ground, but can I treat them as houseplants and just bring them in, or do they need a dormant period? If that is the case, do I just stick them in the garage and stop watering them? Is there anyone here growing ginger in colder climates? Thanks.
