Curcuma Austalasica - Cultivation in Houston?

Posted by newfarmer 8 (My Page) on

I was looking at a Curcuma Australasica at Lowe's. I looked it up on the 'net and it said full sun to full shade. In the heat of Houston, would morning sun be best or does it need actual shade? I have other gingers and heliconia planted in the ground and they survive the winter; will this one survive in the ground?

Aussie Plume will be hardy in Houston. Its hardy here and you and I have the same climate. I know, I have lived in Houston and in Galveston before. I grow all of my curcumas in full sun and we are as hot if not hotter than you here because we are landlocked and the heat and humidity settle. No sea breezes off the ship channel (heh heh) to cool it down. They will want to be well watered, but FS is best. Some of my varieties (Scarlet Fever, Aussie Plume, Inodora etc) get over 6 ft tall here.
