over-wintering white ginger

I bought a ginger root in Hawaii as a souvenir. I planted it in the ground this spring and it did great (altho no bloom). It's base grew considerably and I have about 6 nice, 3' tall, leafy stalks. Here's my question: I want to keep it growing for next season and I'm fully aware that I will need to bring it inside. Do I cut back the stalk and store it like you would a canna bulb or do I leave the growth as is and try to keep the entire plant alive all winter?
