Ginger or?

I have "something" growing in my backyard, and - while it has rhizomes that look like ginger, and the leaves also, it doesn't have the characteristic aroma of the pungent ginger that I buy in the store.

Several years ago, I tried to grow some from a piece that I bought, then proceeded to forget about it. Now this "volunteer" looks like it might have tried to put out a flower (tho all dried up).

I've tried to do a "google" to find pictures of different specimens, but none found.

Does ginger have to be cured or is this something related or?

RE: Ginger or?

Many plants from the ginger family that are grown purely as ornamental plants have no odor to speak of or at least not one you might find pleasant, and there are a number of tropcical plant online nurseries that have all kinds of various gingers pictured. Just look under tropical plant nurseries or somesuch! There are plenty of other tropical and subtropical plants besides gingers that have similar rhizomes, so that's not indication either that it's diffinitely a ginger. Heliconias and Cannas also have similar rhizomes. Even just looking at the leaves and growth habit doesn't always make identifying them easy either, since many of those also have similar leaves and growth habits.
