Grocery store ginger like cannas?

I would like to start growing my own "grocery store ginger," which I use quite a bit. The roots look very similar to canna lily roots, which grow almost like a weed here in Savannah. I've seen cannas growing in full sun to fairly heavy shade. My garden has sun or shade, but not much in between, because I don't have much tree canopy. If anyone can point me in the right direction (sun/shade) I would be most grateful. Also, is the root the only edible part, or can the tender shoots and leaves be used as well? Thanks. (GREAT forum, by the way!)

Hey!!!
I grow culinary ginger from the store.. I grow mine in morning sun and late shade... It is just dang hot and dry here.. I have lived in N.Ga.( Douglasville) and I think even in all day sun you should be able to grow it with no problem...and it should be hardy there as well...it is here..
Good Luck
Chena

Hi Chena: This is Gloria from Brug. Forum ... I planted some pieces of left over culinary ginger and now have a small sprout emerging. Any advice on how to maintain growth? How about the edible parts ... just roots or stems, too? Happy Holidays... but come on Spring!!!!

I've grown ginger in pots inside before, I get good growth, but also get fungus gnats. May be from the dirt, not sure. I think the stems can be candied (called stem ginger).

Hi mersiepoo: Mine is also growing in a pot, but the pot is outdoors. Maybe with the circulating air and warm sunshine I can avoid "fungus gnats" (whatever they are!!!) The shoot is still a smallfry and has not yet begun to unfurl. I'm thinking ginger might be a slow grower? or it might be the ignorance of the gardener ...^G^ Enjoy the Holiday weekend, Gloria

They are agonizingly slow to get started. I started some on a heat mat with a grow light once. They will grow faster outdoors in the spring.
Fungus gnats like cool damp soil and will lay thier eggs and the larvae (little worms) feed on the roots of plants. You can use bt specifically for flies/gnats/mosquitos on them like the 1/4 of a mosquito dunk soaked in a few gal. of warm water overnight. Then pour on the plant. Let it dry out before rewatering and you may have to treat a few times. Also you can use those yellow sticky cards to catch the adult (flying) gnats. Gnats seem to love peat.
Some people put an inch layer of fine sand on the tops of to deter the gnats from burrowing into the soil.
