good time to divide gingers/heleconia's

looking to divide my heleconia's & gingers - planted them 2 years ago from 15 gal pots and now the roots are growing all over each other. When is it a good time? I'm in socal. I just cut off most of the ginger stems as the flowers have wiltered away.

I probably need to move my heleconia's. The foliage is growing beautifully but has not flowered yet. It may be getting a bit too much sun the in summer as the leaves tend to brown easily..otherwise it gets part full & filtered sun throughout the rest of the year.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I used to thin my heliconia in the spring and give the roots to friends. I would think you could transplant it just about anytime since you can't even kill it with herbicide.
