Galangal Culture

I got lucky and a friend brought me a galangal root from the States. I have been unable to find it here in Medellin, Colombia.
How small can you cut the root and still get it to grow? Also do you need to seal the cuts to prevent rot? Our climate is "spring-like" with days in the low to mid 80'sF and nights around 60F year around. I'm thinking it should do ok here but may want more heat. If worse comes to worse I'll send it to someone who lives at a lower elevation :-) This one has got to prosper!
I'm thinking of planting it in a 1:1 coir:rice hull mix. Most things do well in this here even during the heavy rains.
Thanks,
