any use for cardboard half-gallon milk cartons?

We buy organic milk for the kids, and they always come in cardboard half-gallon boxes, the kind with a screw-on plastic lid. Is there anything I can use these for in the garden?
I just feel guilty about them going in the landfill.

I think you can use the bottom half for starting seedlings or cuttings. The waxy coating will keep the carton from disintegrating when you water.

I was going to say the same thing - use the bottom for seed starting. Or cut the carton in half the long way and use both sides.

I actually e-mailed an organic milk company about a year ago to discuss the cardboard half-gallons. I mentioned how I had no good way to dispose of them, and why didn't they make recyclable plastic cartons, and while they are at it, how about gallon-sized ones (cheaper because of more product, less packaging, etc.)

Just last week, out of the blue, long after I had given up on hearing from them and, to be honest, had forgotten I ever contacted them, I got an answer. Seems the company is going to package the milk in recyclable plastic gallon jugs. I guess others spoke up too.

Not that this helps you with your cardboard cartons, lol, but just wanted to show that things are hopefully moving forward!

Good luck!

You can use the tops for funnels.

This won't get rid of all of them, but I saw a craft idea in the family fun magazine (familyfun.com) They had a template online to make a wallet of sorts with the top part of it. I'd try searching around the site for a carton wallet. Look in the crafts section.

How about contacting your local schools and daycares to see if they can use them for craft making. Local churches may like them also. Just a suggestion.
