Earth Day Birthday

I have a child that was born on Earth Day 2000. He's leaning towards either an Earth Day or science theme for his birthday party. Has anyone come across project ideas for kids? I've tried doing some searches, but am finding too much unrelated junk. Are there any contests for Earth Day or anything related? My son would love to do a theme related to Earth Day, but I haven't found any good ideas yet.

I don't know where you live, but could you go on a nature hike? We did this one year for dd's bday. We got a local nature expert to lead the hike and had a picnic. It was a great party (but the weather has to be agreeable.)
