Saving water for drought season

Here in New England, we generally get plenty of precipitation in the fall, winter and spring. My basement dehumidifier fills up almost daily & there is nothing I can do with that water but take it outside and dump it on the already saturated ground. In the summer, I really could use that water in my garden. I was wondering if it would be OK to store some of that dehumidifier water in empty laundry detergent bottles. I'm sure there is some scuzzy sediment in the bottom of the dehumidifier bucket, but there appears to be no easy way to clean it. Should I put a little bleach in the dehumidifier bucket? Or in the detergent bottles so the water doesn't go "funny" in storage? I can't possibly save ALL of the dehumidifier water, but every gallon I could save would be one less gallon I have to pay for in the summer. Any other ideas?

I would just get a huge, plastic garbage can (or several if you really have a lot of water) and store it there. If you do need to treat it at some point, you could just pour a small amount of bleach in the large container. I think you have to wait a few days after using the bleach so that it's safe for the garden. I personally don't think you will have to do anything to it.

g'day mommyandme,

i can't see why not, depending on how much water you generate on how large the container should be?

i would at the very least suggest getting at least one 55 gallon plastic drum with bungs/caps so you can keep it sealed, you may need more than one. or even consider a small rainwater tank?

don't forget to use you grey water from the house as well.

I don't save it for very long - I throw it into my washing machine while it is filling.

It's just super for houseplants, btw as it doesn't contain all the chemicals found in treated water. It's safe for use in steam irons too if you still press clothes. You can also use it for anything you'd use non potable water for. In the mop bucket, to flush a toilet, to clean off dirty or muddy boots, etc.

what about doing the laundry, washing dishes by hand, even flushing the toilet, it will have many uses to save and conserve the use of tap water.
