A story

I have a big garden and try to buy local, and organic when possible and when budget allows. That being said, I was at Walmart yesterday and saw strawberries at at good price. Local wont be ready for 4 weeks or more. The strawberries did not look very ripe and I mentioned that to a woman who walked up to the display to get some stawberries. She said she had some yesterday and they were very good and she wanted to buy more. I said, I can't wait for the local strawberries. She said " I don't like the taste of the local fruit" . I put down the box of strawberries and walked away.

WHAT?????!!!!

That's too weird.

RE: A story

My sense is that she bought ONE box of local fruit that wasn't up to par, then based all her judgements on that one box. If she'd gotten a bad container at WalMart, though, she probably would have assumed it was just one bad container and returned a different week for more. Logic flies weeping out the window...

BTW, there is probably no fruit or vegetable that soaks up the pesticides used on them more than strawberries. If you buy only one organic fruit or vegetable, it should be strawberries. (Second should be grapes.)

The county in California where most of US strawberries are grown has a huge cancer rate.

Thanks for the info tracy ... that's why I grow as much as I can, and buy from farmers markets.

She probably likes the taste of pesticides and unripe fruit since its all she's been exposed to.

I worked with a man who would only eat canned fruit. He didn't like the taste of fresh. Needless to say, we had nothing in common.

RE: A story

Growing up, my dad grew everything in the garden. My mom canned & froze. That was all we ate at home. I remember how much I LOVED the food at school for hot lunch (on the rare occasions I got it). In about 3rd grade, I asked a lunch lady how they made their green beans. She told me they came in a can & just heated them up.

I remember going to my mom having a serious talk about how much better canned beans are & we really needed to buy them. It was like I'd discovered the holy grail and sharing the green bean secret with my mom would change our lives. I would BEG my mom to go buy us canned green beans because they were so much better than ours at home. A couple times a year, my mom would buy me a can of green beans to shut me up and make me happy.

Also, my mom tells the story about being a little girl growing up on the farm. She says she loved it when the cow got sick because store-bought milk was like drinking candy.

Another one...we only had well water at home. I remember going to town to visit my grandparents, and couldn't stop drinking the yummy chlorinated city water. I always thought it was great to have flavored water.

RE: A story

My husband was skeptical to eat fresh vegetables when we were dating. He was skeptical to eat any vegetables besides potatoes period.

I just incorporated them into my cooking hiding them wherever I could.

Last summer we decided to do the whole eat local and fresh thing. Now he can't get enough vegetables. I hear him talking to co-workers telling them how much better produce from the garden or from the farmer's market tastes.

His favorite is swiss chard. Who knew?
