| Is there anything I can do with cereal boxes and the like? My community doesn't take any cardboard besides corrugated.

I made some of the carryalls in this video, but I used them as gift boxes. You can personalize them too. They're great for little girls' birthdays, because they can use their gift box as a dress up purse. I donate my extra things like this to the Boys and Girls club in my neighborhood. We have a great art instructor who can use them to make almost anything. I have a friend who makes her own paper and cards, and she loves the cereal boxes for making card stock. She first gets a hole punch and punches out colorful dots, then she uses those to make pictures on the cards. If you google "cereal box crafts", you can get a lot of ideas.

Do you have a compost pile? Rip/shred them up and throw them on the pile with all the other "greens" & "browns".

I rip mine up and put them in the compost. Creative ideas, junkyardgirl! :) Dee

*sigh* No compost heap...I rent in town. :-(

get on your recyclers about it Kelly, boxboard belongs in the same pile as corrugated, goes to the same re-pulpers Bill

Ha! I found someone who will take mixed paper and paperboard! YAY! I have to take it to a different place in town, but that will cut my trash in half if not more. :)

Rip/cut them up into small pieces and bury in the garden. Or ask someone who has a garden and ask if they want free pre-compost.

I have an indoor cat & litter box. In my efforts to break my addiction to plastic store bags, I use alternative containers for cat litter waste. I use cereal boxes (as well as other misc food boxes & packagings) for litter...just whatever looks to be a decent useable size box or bag whenever I generate the garbage. The upside is the boxes will deteriorate in the landfill as opposed to the plastics...AND, I'm weaning myself off store bags.

You can run them thru a shredder and use it as mulch.

It's ok to use cereal boxes on a compost pile (shredded)? I thought for some reason that one was to avoid using the heavily printed cardboard? Maybe I was thinking of the glossy paper?
RE: cereal boxes?

I suppose if you are going to use them in the compost heap, why not use them as a compost container, then just throw iin the whole darn thing? I never thought to compost them, great idea!

My cereal boxes aren't corrugated. Here they just go in the mixed paper recycling bin. Tom

middlemike - My compost pile has happily eaten any type of cardboard I can throw at it as well as what I would call glossy paper. Nothing glossy like a picture, but the glossy newsprint ads have broken down just fine.

I cut the bottoms off (about 1 or 2 inches or so) and use them to organize my junk drawers, make up drawer. Any place that you would use a little tray. If you did it on the side, you would have a bigger tray. This works for mac and cheese boxes etc too.

Is all cardboard compostable? I've been guiltily throwing away my breakfast bar boxes, Poptart boxes, cocoa mix boxes, etc. I have a compost bin. Can they all just be cut up and tossed in there? Ditto corrugated cardboard?

Yes Lilacs that stuff can go in. It can be shredded or whole depending on how quickly you want it to decompose .

Great! I've been taking my cardboard and ripping/cutting it into small pieces for the compost bin. That much less trash for the landfill.
