What to do with the old ones? Can they be recycled?

I have kept all of mine, on the off chance that a critical CF goes on the blink and I can't get out to the store to replace it that exact minute. I suspect I'll most likely bequeath them in a will to my children before I come close to actually using another one again however. But still, waste not want not.

Only thing I had found was HHW collection may take them. Guess I will try and check locally to see if that is the case.

What is HHW? I have been asking myself this very light bulb question. We have not converted to the new bulbs, as I have a real problem in throwing away something perfectly good in lieu of something the media says I must have. I have replaced a couple of bulbs as they burned out, but I just don't get going through the whole house, throwing away perfectly good bulbs? Trade energy efficiency for more landfill?

I will say, there are only two of us, and typically the only light that is burning is in the room we are in, so we minimize our usage. Of course that means that our bulbs last for years. I'm seeing a vicious cycle here ...

I made the plunge about a month ago. Spent the $$ on the efficient bulbs & changed out the rest of the house that hadn't been done yet.

I've kept a few incandescents installed in the places where the efficient bulbs either won't fit correctly, or where the light is used a few minutes at a time & not a good candidate for efficient bulb use.

I ended up with 8 spare incandescents. I kept 2 and gave the rest to my neighbor. Neighbor was thrilled.

HHW = household hazardous waste. I guess I could probably find someone to give the working ones to. Still hate for these to end up in the landfill after use.

I didn't even think to ask or wonder...just tossed them as we replaced them. We replaced them gradually, as they burned out, so as not to "waste" what we already had. Aside from our dining room chandelier (which uses smaller "flame lights"), and maybe a couple lights in the basement that haven't burnt out yet, all of our other lightbulbs are CFL's or long flourescents (kitchen and aquariums)now. I even replaced the incandescents in the reptile tank with white and red CFL's for heat/light.

I'll be interested to hear if anyone finds a way to recycle the incandescents though - we switch to colored party bulbs once per year for our halloween party, so when those burn out (it will be awhile, since we only use them for a short period of time once a year), we'll need to dispose of them (will replace with colored CFL's when they're gone).
