| ...remembered to take my own bag to the Farmer's Market.
I bought a few things, & each time, I said, "Oh no, I don't need a bag, I have my own. Save that bag, those things cost money."
It worked.
Now if I could just figure out how to get the discarded "samples" of watermelon, cantaloupe, tomato, & pineapple into my compost heap without handling other people's germs... |

| You said "Now if I could just figure out how to get the discarded "samples" of watermelon, cantaloupe, tomato, & pineapple into my compost heap without handling other people's germs..." If they will let you, perhaps use a big plastic rubbermaid tub in your trunk... But plastic isnt always the greatest for the environment... Glass is better. But in this situation I dont think it matters all that much. And to sanitze your hands after touching it, you could use those hand sanitizers. I prefer to stay away from those though. I make my own all natural handsoap! it kills germs! Most people dont know that essential oils can act as germicides, fungicides, pest repellants (ants in your house? mix a few essential oil drops with water and spray the area they will leave!), and can even kill viruses. Its so natural and healthier for the environment. I dont want to type it all out if your not interested, but if you are, post back and let me know. You may even know all about it already, but if you dont and if you want me to, I'll tell ya all about it! sammie |

| sammie, that sounds wonderful! Reply on this thread if you like, but it's a sort of lightweight thread. You might want to post a separate thread so the subject will show & people can open it knowing what it's about. Thanks! |

| I bought a few things, & each time, I said, "Oh no, I don't need a bag, I have my own. Save that bag, those things cost money." It worked. Well done! I have a problem telling them I have my own bag before they hustle the produce off into a new plastic bag -- they're just too quick. Some items (like salad greens) don't even come out of the bags they're in. So I've taken to first buying the stuff I know will come in bags and then putting later purchases in those bags. I'm also getting better at saying "I'll take these -- andi'llputtheminthisbag, thanks". :-) |

| Good for you! I am now at the point where I get to the corner grocery and think " Why didn't I remember to bring my own bag or basket?" Often If I'm just grabbing a gal of milk, and/or bread, I'll ask for NO bag! Once the cashier remarked "Are you sure? You're actually paying for them?" (through the cost of the food). Does that mean if everyone out there brought their own bags, the price of food would diminish? Nice thought, Huh! Jackie |

| That's great! I also bring my own cloth bags to the store, but like Steve, I find it's a mad rush to make sure they KNOW I have my own bag before they fill up the plastic. I've taken to putting my bags right on the moving belt before the groceries, so they have to move them to get to the groceries. But Sylvia, why are you worried about other peoples' germs on things you are composting? I could see if you wanted to take the samples home to eat ( :) ) but if you are composting, who cares about their germs? :) Dee |

| It's the idea of *handling* them that creeps me out- If the scraps were in a heavy wax-coated cardboard box, I'd be happy to haul off the "trash"! |
