the styrofoam cups are gone!

Early last year I posted on my office compost bin, which began as coffee ground collection and then expanded into a real compost collector.

Today a colleague pointed out that the company-provided cups are now cardboard. Since they actually say "compostable" on them, I sent out a message reminding everyone that they can compost these cups in the compost bin. I also noted that the cold water cups are now recyclable PETE.

Then my boss thanked me for sending the message and told me that she made the change thoughout our 100 person or so company unit! And she is still considering stopping the provision of disposable cups entirely! She is a mid-level manager, so I was amazed that she could make this happen.

Yeehah!

RE: the styrofoam cups are gone!

Having worked in an office that did not provide cups for coffee I have some suggestions for your office. Each floor/area should have a cup return place to put cups that no one owns or knows who owns. We were in a five story building and I would find cups turning all kinds of colors because no one wanted to touch a cup that was not theirs. Once a week Friday or Monday ask people to snag any unclaimed cup on their own desk or in the common area to bring to the cup return place.

You need to remember that not everyone brings a cup on the first day of work or if they are in the office for a meeting or visit. Some provision for providing cheap coffee/drink mugs on a temporary basis.
