Are CFL bulbs not created equal?

I switched all my bulbs over to these a couple of years ago and 3 have burned out within the last month. These were cheap ones one of our local hardware stores had on sale for $1 each. Are some bulbs better than others?

My experience says 'yes'. I can't say I have had a CFL burn out yet in about five years of use (for the oldest ones), but the quality of the light is better on the name-brand bulbs, they get brighter faster, they're easier to screw into the sockets, ... I've tended to stay away from the cheapest bulbs anyway since I've heard negative reports about Feit/Commercial Electric (Home Depot) and Lights of America from very early on and I won't buy anything from Sunbeam or GE just on general principle. That pretty much leaves me with Osram/Sylvania, IKEA, and maybe one other brand.

Thanks Steve. I'll keep that in mind.
