Renting solar panels?

Has anyone heard about new companies that are letting you rent solar panels for 1, 5, or 25 years? You are locked in to a cost per KW for the whole contract and keep any "net energy" that is sold back to the power companies.

I haven't done too much research but would love to hear if anyone here has done it or know someone who has.

Right now, I think it's only available in the state of CA. I looked in to something like this for KS - no net-metering, no installation companies qualified to install, and no state subsidies. It will probably push eastward over the next few years, but (from what I understand), net-metering is one of the primary prerequisites.

if someone is going to rent you something, their purpose is to make a profit .... why pad out someone elses bank account on top of the cost of buying your own panels?

Every industry has a rental sector, this is no different. Not everybody likes to rent but many can't afford to buy. I applaud the effort the OP is making, even if it is not the most ideal way of doing this.

Oh they're down here in Texas too. It's part of an electric company I think. It's not really rental here...they install on your roof if you qualify and you pay a set KW/H cost and get a credit if you make more than you use.....something like that. I wasn't interested really but kinda listened to the salesperson.

So what do you do if you have to move? Or want to get out of the contract? That's lot of holes in the roof to fix.

The tax credit may offset purchase sufficiently to afford to buy rather than to rent.

I talked briefly to a rep at a home show in Colorado Springs. I think they install them on your roof, you pay a fixed price/KWH for the next 20 yr or so. You do pay for the energy you use, but that price does not change. I don't recall anything about any excess power generated. I assumed that's how they make their $$ ??
