Good organic product or remedy for rough heels?

Hi folks,
Does anyone know of a good solution to dry rough heels, i.e. which natural or organic product I can buy or home remedy I can make? I'm really suffering with it this summer... especially all those barefoot walks on my patio. Ugh.
A lot of the intensive heel cremes I find are basically petroleum/mineral oil based with a bunch of urea added. Not so green, there.
Or if this is directed to the wrong board, please point me in the right direction.

| when mine get really dry I start with a cool foot bath (summer)or a warm one in winter, adding a few drops of peppermint essential oil. Then take a pumis stone and scrub off the dead skin cells. After that rub on a mixture of sugar, olive oil and a couple drops of essential oil and sit with my feet up for a few minutes. This gives the oil time to soak in. Then rinse with warm water and pat dry with a towel. |

| vwtx has it right. You can't treat rough/dry heals by moisturizing; you have to slough off the hard skin and then moisturize the soft skin you reveal. I find that foot files work better than pumice stones, personally, and a ton of people swear by the PedEgg. (No kidding. I was shocked as well.) For moisturizing after sloughing, something with olive oil as a base should work very well. |

I have also heard many people swear by the egg shaped shaver thingy .
I get cracked heels whenever I wear sandals .
As long as I wear socks and shoes I am fine .
I was told that the cracking problems are caused by a fungus .
Try a little athlete's foot cream mixed with your regular care . |

| Vicks VapoRub - no kidding! Slathering the soles of your feet w/VV at night (put on socks to avoid infusing the sheets) will stop night coughing in its tracks (appropriate in winter) and an unexpected fringe benefit is feet soft as a baby's behind - no kidding! Try it for a few consectutive nights - amazing results, cost effective and easy. |

| I have a Checi nickel file I really like. The Ped Egg apparently needs to have the blades replaced periodically, which the Checi doesn't require. You have to maintain with the foot file regularly if you regularly do things that roughen your feet (I do, too). I swear by pure unrefined shea butter for heavy duty moisturising but it'll make your sheets greasy. I wear socks over it at night. Kristin |

| I agree that the pumice stone is useful. I also have trouble with the skin on my heels cracking. There are salt and sugar scrubs that can help. I have one called Big Kahuna Native Naturals that contains mineral salts, Hawaiian salts, almond, avocado, apricot, jojoba, grapeseed, sunflower, safflower, olive, and Vitamin E oils, grapefruit seed extract, and fragrance. Whole Foods also sells something called Loofah Exfoliating Scrub. Straight vitamin E oil is also quite healing. Since I studied karate for several years and kicked and exercised barefoot, my feet took quite a beating. |

| Personally, I decided to go with the "ounce of prevention" and just always wear shoes outside. Ikept stepping on junk in the yard and getting owies and ouchies and I dont know WHAT I was thinking wearing sandals when I was messing with the compost. There's a playground in town and I dont know what kind of trees they use for the shredded bark mulch, but whenever we went there and I had sandals on, I get the most awful itching reaction and Id have to go in the bathroom and wash the dust off my feel and stay OFF the mulch, so same thing, realized i gotta wear shoes there. |

| Thanks for the tip on using Vicks. I have a menthol rub called J.R. Watkins, so I tried it after reading this thread. It does work really well for healing cracked feet and softening the skin (after filing dead skin). I noticed that the info written on the tin says it is a good topical analgesic. I tried rubbing an inflamed tendon and sore muscle with the product, and it was helpful. My gardener's hands also benefitted, as I rubbed the residual left on my hands into cuticles and rough spots. | What great tips, I'll have to try vicks. I wonder about the fungus thing. I only have rough cracked heels in the summer when I don't wear socks and shoes so I figured the socks were continually sloughing off the skin. I have to investigate the Ped Egg thing, never heard of it. I do admit though that it sounds a little scary if it has blades. |
