On the GOOD side......what have you seen lately?

| I was wondering what positive things others have seen.
I was in the grocery store last week and had forgotten my cloth bags in the car so I was going to buy a couple more (I needed them anyway.) but they were sold out! The rack is usually full.
P.S. Since I had been naughty in forgetting my bags, I told the bagger to just put the groceries in the cart without bags. She did a double take so I told her that I would suffer the consequences of my forgetfulness and bag the groceries in the parking lot. It seems to have worked - I'm remembering to bring the bags in! |

| I have seen a few more people using re-usable bags, which is a good thing. I've also noticed a few recycling cans in addition to garbage cans in public places. That's a good sign, considering all the water and juice bottles that get thrown out. Let's hope folks use the cans! :)

| In a local stationary store, the customer ahead of me purchased 2 packets of paper, and about 5 smaller items, and the clerk asked her if she needed a bag. (customer said yes, so I was a little crestfallen she did not have her own bag, but the clerk asking if bags are required is becoming more common-and welcome). Heading upstairs from the basement and dh asking me if I can take his snack plate up and dump the radish trimmings into the compost bucket for him!!!??? Plates being left by the sink with orange peels or other organics on them (not dumped in the garbage), because they know I want it for the compost - I have yet to get them to throw in my ice cream pail, but that'll come...that'll come. ~kioni~ |

Seeing more folks around here on bikes.
Seeing the Farmers Market packed week after week, folks buying local foods more.
Knowing the farmer behind us has gone all organic!
Seeing more wildlife especially the endangered kind around. I had bear poop in my driveway a few weeks ago. 30 years ago you'd a been hard pressed to see a bear in this area. now they are becoming a common site. Same with the bald eagle, turkey and coyote.
Even the activity on this board has increased so people are more interested in doing better. |

they'll be so excited! Although I don't like paying it, I think $4 gasoline has made everybody more careful about how they (we) use it.

| Regarding water usage, our town officials have been keeping an eye on utility records of our citizens. So far they have visited 100 of the worst offenders and plan to visit a total of 600. We live in a town where water usage is closely regulated so it's good to see the town 'policing' the standards they've set. I'd like to see them state the 'average' monthly water usage on our utility bill so we could see where how we rank compared to our fellow citizens. (Seriously people, do you NEED to pressure wash your driveway???) |

| I read recently about how UPS has saved about 3 million gallons of gas by making only right hand turns. Has anyone read this? I don't know if there are any bad effects from that, but it sounds pretty good. |

| UPS has started mapping out their routes, so essentially they are making one big loop. Usually left turns require more idle time than rights. Good things that are happening for the environment are - price of gas and olympics! |

| I heard about the UPS right turns too. How simple is that? We have been living in an unconscious state for so long that even the simplest things seem ingenious. wake up people! I keep having to cuff myself upside the head "Hello - are you there?". Slow but sure. |

| I had to stay home to mind the animals and business when my husband went to the other part of the state for a family reunion. I didn't want to miss it entirely, but also didn't want to drive two cars that distance for two people's use. So, despite how much they've cut their routes and service, I decided to take a bus, and then ride home with him. I figured that I would be the only person on board, but was pleasantly surprised to find out that it was packed! It was also comfortable and on time, and the terminals were clean and well managed. So a whole bunch of people got to where they wanted to go without a whole bunch of vehicles and I also saved about thirty dollars in gasoline and got a good nap. I would do it again without hesitation. |
