Thanks for posting this, msyoohoo. I both enjoyed, learned and identified with all lot of what's being said. The rest of the site is interesting too and I've passed it along.

You're welcome zigzag. Definitely worth the 20 minutes it takes to watch. Just when I thought I was getting a grip on "green", something like this comes along to let me know that I still have blinders on. I guess it's one step at a time. Glad you passed it on - I have too. Maureen

"green" in N America has quickly become another marketing tool to suck consumers into further consumption - buy green, not un-green, but buy!!!! some have been pushing for 'cradle to grave' responsibility for manufacturers for a long time, if a corp makes and sells a product, they should be willing to take back the 'left overs' and reuse them, and more importantly, folks should wake up to the fact that they don't need all the 'stuff' that the ads say will make your life wonderful Bill

Bill - I could not agree more! I have been downsizing my life for 1.5-2 years and I am very hesitant to bring ANYTHING into my house! Will I use it in a few days? If no, don't want it! Plain and simple.

Having grown up in and spent my so-called adult life in a frugal, conservative mode, sometimes I feel ahead of today's game. Turns out, frugal (or the 'use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without' mentality) is very compatible with "green" in many ways. Now, it's not that I've been living under a bridge or anything - frugal living has allowed me to make the rubber meet the road in good ways - good ways that have staying power. I have a very nice home, tricked out with a few 'wants' (all of which have 'green' merit) and a nest egg which I guard ferociously from all the evils ..... de-, stag-, in- flation...... the economy is now dealing out. My hatred of shopping, recreational or otherwise, makes it easy to keep my moat stocked with alligators! Most rewarding is that my children - unscarred by not having all the 'in' things as they grew up, but nonetheless going thru short stages of their own rampant consumerism, are now embracing the 'less is more' concept too. That's good. Problem is that there are now generations of Americans who have known nothing but the consumer, throw-away lifestyle. They're the ones who, hopefully, will watch and embrace a video such as this. Not to say they don't think ..... they do, but have no other basis than consumerism, new toys, more-more-more. Person by person, change is coming and The Story of Stuff is a good start.

I just viewed this video, thank you for posting. They have taken the words right out of my mouth (of course more eloquently, intelligently, and informed). I have always suspected this type of marketing ploy that sucker us in, take our money, take our ability to think for ourselves, ruin our planet and, like zigzag wrote, are ingraining this "throw-away lifestyle" into our children. It is very difficult to combat that with kids, they are exposed to it everywhere. People need to sit down with our older generation (maybe those who have gone through the Great Depression) and listen to how they live their lives. I think we can all benefit from that.

And once we sit down with the older generation, we should sit down with our younger generation. Or better yet, sit with both.

Thanks for this link. I found it very informative with a lot of info on the site. Particularly the link to the cosmetic database. The make-up I use, an average 6 out of 10. The shampoo and conditioner I use, a 5 out of 10. All of which I have used for years. When I looked up the hair care products I use, it says on the site: developmental and reproductive toxicity. I've been trying to get pregnant for 2 years. Christy

It was a simple and easily understandable video and one I'd like to see everyone explore. I guess I liked it, because I have been harping about the very same issues for years, and who doesn't like to see their feelings validated? Last year after many years hiatus, I went back to school and took a course in Environmental Geology. OMGosh. When we covered issues like wastewater management, water treatment and landfills, it was like watching a very bad science fiction movie. We're drowning in our own garbage. Even a dog has enough sense not to soil in it's own bed.

calliope - so you've seen the whole enchilada. I have zero formal education on the issues and, quite frankly, I don't know that I could handle the whole truth. The whole concept of landfills.....never mind. I just know that if we were all more aware of the effects of our seemingly harmless actions, the planet would be a lot better off. Contrary to what many others believe, I think that every single little thing that we do will add up...lead by example, don't be a zealot and make people feel guilty, just do what you can and not ignore it. It takes time to develop habits - slow and steady wins the race. Stepping down from the soapbox.

i totally agree with you!! and with this ozone and this other thing the scientists are saying isn't happening, well they're knocking down all the tree's over in the rain forest, exactly what in the world did they think was gonna happen when all the "water" and humidity" from the ground wasn't held down? i'm not the brightest but i'd think it was gonna evaporate and ya know, do like it's doing, somehow heat up!! LOL i loved the first part, now i'm gonna look up the cosmetic, i don't wear that stuff, but i do shampoo, LOL iwonder what mine rates at. **scared to look** LOL ~Medo ps your still the bomb!! LOL |
